Early professional legal advice “softens the blow” of divorce

We understand that getting divorced can be a highly upsetting and stressful experience for divorcing couples, their children, and often their wider families. With this in mind, we want to emphasise the importance of taking early professional legal advice in order to soften the blow of divorce as much as possible.

Our team of specialist family solicitors are members of the accredited family law body, Resolution. Resolution is a community of family justice professionals who work to resolve issues in a constructive way.

Having recently surveyed more than 1,000 divorcees, Resolution has found that 41 per cent of those surveyed, who divorced in the last five years, suffered mental ill health as a result of their divorce. Whilst most reported feeling depressed and anxious, many also reported having suicidal thoughts.

This certainly suggests a significant worsening of people’s experience of the divorce process. It also corresponds with the increasing number of “DIY divorces”, whereby people seek little or no professional legal assistance when getting divorced. In fact, 63% of those surveyed by Resolution said that taking early professional legal advice, and having their legal rights and options made clear to them from the outset, would have improved their personal experience of divorce.

We can advise you about your rights and options. We will also strive to keep communications between you and your former spouse amicable, because we believe that a non-confrontational approach to family law issues produces better outcomes and less conflict for divorcing couples and their families.

However, looking after your best interests is at the forefront of our minds, therefore if a non-confrontational solution cannot be reached, we shall not hesitate to adopt a robust approach to achieve the best possible outcome for you.

If you are considering divorce or separation, do not hesitate to contact one of family solicitors on 01628 631051 or email family@colemans.co.uk to book an initial one hour consultation for £150 including VAT.
